INTRODUCTION TO PLAY THERAPY

“Play Therapy is a way of helping children express their feelings and deal with their emotional problems, using play as the main communication tool.” British Association of Play Therapy (BAPT) definition

This one day workshop aims to offer attendees an opportunity to creatively explore:
* What is Play Therapy?
* Virginia Axline’s 8 principles of non-directive play therapy
You can read more about her theory in her book: Play Therapy
* Examples of offering play therapy to Children and Young People

We will look at each of Axline’s 8 principles: exploring both the theory and experience using lots of skills practice.

The workshop will be very experiential! Their will be role plays and skills practice using creative materials.


COUNSELLING ADOLESCENTS:
USING THE PERSON CENTRED APPROACH

This one day workshop will explore the challenge of working with this client group:
* Dan Seigel's work about adolescent brain development: this will give us a context of what is happening internally
* Peter Pearce & Ros Sewell's Tenuous Contact model about counselling adolescents: this new theory has been developed based upon Pearce and Sewell's work in secondary schools in London

* Carl Rogers 6 conditions for building a therapeutic relationship

Their will be role plays and skills practice, as well as teaching using PowerPoint presentations.

COUNSELLING IN SCHOOLS

This one day workshop will explore what impact this context has upon counselling children and young people:
* Counselling in both primary and secondary schools
* Children and young's perspectives of counselling 
* School staff's perspective of counselling 
* Promoting the benefits of counselling in the school context
* Communication across the school context
* Balancing client confidentiality and collaboration with school staff
* Working collaboratively with others in the school context: such as school nurse
* Building relationships with school staff
* Promoting emotional / mental health in schools
* Features of a successful counselling service in school
* Research findings into school 

Their will be role plays and skills practice, as well as teaching using PowerPoint presentations.

SUPERVISING COUNSELLORS WORKING WITH CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

This one day workshop will explore some of the ethical dilemmas and complexities involved in working with this client group.
* The differences in supervising counsellors working with children and young people compared to adult clients.
* Personal development involved in working with children and young people
* What does the BACP ethical framework say about working with children and young people? How we can use this as part of supervision reflecting on working with client group.
* Legal issues also impact on counselling children and young people. Such as age of consent or safeguarding / child protection concerns. How can a supervisor assist their supervisee with such dilemmas? 

* Working collaboratively with a supervisor exploring limits of competence.
* Their will be opportunity to bring client issues to explore in the training group.

Their will be role plays and skills practice, as well as teaching using PowerPoint presentations.

The workshop may be of interest to both supervisors in training as well as qualified supervisors.
